Tanzania’s ethnic tribes – puzzle pieces part of a beautiful whole

All the 4 major roots of African people, Khoisan, Nilotic, Bantu and Cushitic people, can be found in Tanzania and only in Tanzania. Fossil remains of humans and pre-human hominids have been found in Tanzania that date back over 2 million years, making the area one of the oldest-known inhabited areas on Earth. More than 120 ethnic groups are represented here; the groups differ, to varying degrees from other groups in culture, language, and social organization.

Sukuma

The largest ethnic group is Sukuma and represents about 16 percent of the total population.A Bantu ethnic group that traditionally believe in spirit posession and view the world as interconnected with all living things.

Nyamweza & Chagga

The second and third largest ethnic groups are Nyamwezi and Chagga; both from the Bantu groups. Unlike many other societies in Africa, Chagga women have a forefront position of the Chagga soceity concerning both education and economical issues. Many Wanyamwezi follow a traditional religion of ancestor worshipping despite many conversion attempts by Islam and Christianity.

Maasai

The Maasai are among the best known of African ethnic groups, due to their residence near the many game parks of East Africa, and their distinctive customs and clothes. The Maasai that belong to the Nilotic ethnic group speak Nilo-Saharan language and are semi-nomadic. Singing and dancing is a big part of the Maasai culture.
